The Free Software page on mancill.com

Oh wait, did you think I meant free software as in ``free beer next Tuesday,'' as cleverly seen on a bar marquee in Atlanta? Well, in a way yes - there is quite a large amount of free-beer style free software out there. But just as important to many of us is free software as in freedom of speech. For the philosophical underpinnings of all of this free software ``stuff,'' see the Free Software Foundation. And for those of you waiting for next Tuesday, let me know when you find it.

Debian

I have been volunteer developer for Debian since January of 1998. Debian is a high-quality, 100% free operating system that was originally based on GNU/Linux, but now runs other operating system kernels as well.

The list of packages I maintain that are included in the official distribution can be found on Debian's package QA site, along with bugs and such. In addition to package maintenance, I do some sponsoring for Debian, meaning that I help contributors and soon-to-be developers get their packages into the main archive where they can reach a larger audience. After all, why should folks have to spend time packaging software when they can simply use it?

HOWTOs

  • Like many, I'm not much for documentation, but some things are just too handy not to jot down to share. And for those things, I have my tips page.
